Rebuilding a dynasty team can be hard. The goal is always to be a long term contender, but that is much easier said that done. But if you get to a place where you need to rebuild or retool, it is important to know how to do that. I recorded a podcast on how to rebuild a dynasty team and you can check that out below.

How To Rebuild a Dynasty Roster

Looking at dynasty rankings through a rebuilding lens can be helpful whether you are rebuilding or not. You could be trading with a rebuilding team. Being able to see values from their perspective is helpful too! That is why I wanted to creat both win-now and rebuilding dynasty lists.

General tips when Rebuilding

• Fade pitching, especially pitching prospects

  • Everyone wants to go out and acquire the top pitching prospects. I get it, they are fun and enticing. But the bust rate on pitching prospects is so high. Never trade for top pitching prospects. Instead, pick up hot pitching prospects off the waiver wire and flip them for young MLB help or hitting prospects. You can rebuild much faster that way.

• Avoid catchers and relief pitchers

  • The turnover rate at both positions is very high and the shelf life on each tends to be shorter. In a rebuild you don’t necessarily need either position to help you compete. If you have valuable RP, trade them. Same with an aging catcher like JT Realmuto or Sal Perez. A contending team may overpay.

• Don’t trade for strictly prospects and don’t trade for top prospects

  • The bust rate is high on prospects. You should be looking to trade for former top prospects that have come up and struggled. Those guys cost much less and present a better chance to provide a return on investment.
