These Prospects Are on Fire! Wednesday's Standout Minor League Performances
Chris recaps the top performers from across Minor League Baseball, including some live looks between the Winston Salem Dash and Greenville Drive.
Yesterday brought some strong performances across the minors. I got a live look at Winston Salem and Greenville and saw a dominant performance from Christian Oppor and Braden Montgomery.
On top of that, we had several other standout performers who are worth talking about, including Jace Avina’s multi-homer game for the second day in a row. Let’s get to it!
Free Minor League Baseball Recap Previews
Each day, I will pick a hitter and pitcher who stand out and deserve the top spot on the sheet. Those players’ reports will be free for all to read. The rest will be paywalled for Dynasty Dugout Subscribers. The article is around 3000 words, giving you detailed player reports to encapsulate everything you need to know.
Christian Oppor, LHP, Chicago White Sox, 20, A+
Drafted in the fifth round of the 2023 draft, the White Sox gave Oppor a sizeable bonus of $550k, and while he had thrown just 45 pro innings before the start of the 2025 season. Things clicked this offseason, and Oppor has really taken off this year. After dominating in Single-A, Oppor jumped to High-A, and while the results have not been as good, Oppor has still been solid.
Last night, Oppor turned in his second straight ten-strikeout performance. Over his last two starts, Oppor has struck out 20 batters and walked just two across 9.2 innings of work. It was an incredibly dominant performance that I got to witness in Greenville.
Oppor’s fastball sits in the mid-90s consistently, touching 98 mph. It has a good shape to it with ride and run, and is an effective bat-missing pitch from the left side. Throwing from a 5’7” release height, Oppor creates 14-15 inches of IVB and 13 inches of horizontal movement. The vertical approach angle sits around -4.5, which is very good when paired with the velocity.
The changeup development has been huge for Oppor as it gets late tumble and fade, playing well off his fastball from a tough arm slot. It generates 14-15 inches of fade, and tunnels with the fastball well. It was even more impressive in person and made right-handed hitters look silly.
The slider gets 13-15 inches of glove-side sweep, and then he added an upper-80s cutter this offseason. Oppor is a premium athlete and mover on the mound who has really cleaned up his delivery. He has not gotten the love he deserves, but he looks like a very strong lefty for a 20-year-old.
Jace Avina, OF, New York Yankees, 22, A+
Avina is a prospect I get asked about often, given the fact he has consistently put up solid numbers throughout his career. The 2025 season is no exception as Avina continues to swing it well while repeating High-A with Hudson Valley.
Being more of a streaky hitter, Avina is one of those tears right now. Avina has four home runs in his last two games and has driven in seven runs. While on the shorter side, Avina has a strong build and has shown the ability to get to power in the past.
The contact skills have been the most notable improvement this year, and the biggest thing that has held Avina back in the past. The strikeout rate is down three percentage points, but the overall and in-zone contact rates are up four to five percentage points.
The launch angles are good, and Avina gets the ball in the air nearly 75 percent of the time. The pull rate is up to 55 percent this season,n and the air pull rate is a very impressive 36 percent.
It feels like Avina has been around for some time now, but just turned 22 years old. While I am not sure I would say a breakout is happening, Avina could be a solid player.
JACE AVINA IS UNREAL😮😮😮😮😮
That's his 2nd home run in as many at bats TODAY!
He's hit 4 HR's in his last 7 AB...🔥— Hudson Valley Renegades (@HVRenegades)
