Chris Clegg breaks down everything you need to know from yesterday's MiLB action.
Another week in the books of Minor League Baseball. Data is stabilizing, we have better ideas on who players are at this point and can start forming better opinions. Monday is a day off for most levels, but we will have complex level ball today, so plenty to watch out for and discuss.
But before Monday’s game action starts, let’s break down Sunday’s MiLB slate!
MiLB Hitters
Ralphy Velazquez, 1B, CLE, 18, A
Everyday, it seems like Velazquez just continues to prove he is worth of being a top 100 prospect and maybe even higher than that. A two-home run day on Sunday pushed him to six on the season, and his slash line currently sits at .264/.343/.553 in 105 plate appearances.
The exit velocities are legit, and his contact rate is 74.4 percent, which shows a good feel for contact. It is safe to say that Velazquez is no longer a catcher at this point after 21 games at first base this year and non behind the dish. But that is okay; the bat will play at the corner.
Velazquez has a smooth, compact swing from the left side but has a ton of power in his 6’3”/215 lb frame. Selected in the first round of the 2023 draft out of California, Velazquez seems to be fully breaking out.
Rayne Doncon, 3B, MIN, 20, A
Doncon left the Dodgers organization and somehow got better, at least from a performance standpoint. Last year, Doncon spent the season as a 19-year-old at Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, where he slashed .216/.283/.368 with 14 home runs. Despite the poor results, I thought it was a decent showing from a young player in the first taste of full-season ball. Doncon struck out just 21.6 percent of the time while aggressively swinging at over 50 percent of pitches he saw.
After a three-hit day on Sunday where Doncon finished a triple shy of the cycle, he is now slashing .263/.342/.474 with four home runs and eight doubles in 111 plate appearances. The surface numbers may be a bit deceiving though as Doncon has a contact rate right around 70 percent and an average exit velocity of 85.7 mph. The inconsistent exit velocities have led to just a three percent barrel rate.
So, while the performance has been good and fun to follow, I think there are still some question marks that need to be answered.
