The Dynasty Digest: May 3, 2024
Chris Clegg breaks down everything you need to know from yesterday's MiLB action.
We have turned the calendar to May and we finally have a solid sample of data to start making informed opinions on players. Some people are ready to hit the panic button, but my suggestion is, it is grind time. Some people don’t have the patience and will begin to check out or sell off. If you think about where you are in the standings less than a fifth of the way through the season, imagine what you can do with 130+ more games!
Stay active on the waiver wire, make trades, play to win. Fantasy baseball is a grind. You got this!
Let’s talk about some players that stood out in yesterday’s action. Before we do, be sure to check out our updated dynasty and prospect rankings!
MiLB Hitters
Deyvison De Los Santos, 1B, ARI, 20, AA
The Diamondbacks have to be thrilled that they got paid by the Guardians for their Rule 5 selection of De Los Santos, that he got to develop with Cleveland and spend a ton of time in big league camp and is not back in Arizona’s org.
De Los Santos has three hits on Thursday, including a home run, pushing his total to nine on the season. Having four home runs in his last four games, De Los Santos is slashing an impressive .398/.446/.742 on the year with a 23.8 percent strike-out rate.
2023 was a tale of two halves as De Los Santos was sent to the development list mid-season where he made a swing change that paid off in big ways. Before the development list, he was slashing just .206/.269/.308, but after coming back De Los Santos slashed .322/.340/.596 with 14 home runs in 238 plate appearances. Should it be concerning that he posted just a 2.5 percent walk rate? Absolutely. But as we have discussed, De Los Santos is hyper-aggressive, and things were just working with the swing change.
The swing change has allowed him to unlock more contact and he is actually hitting the ball on the ground at the lowest rate of his career, down over ten percentage points from last season.
Daniel Guilarte, MI, MIL, 20, A
While Jackson Chourio was the prized signing of the 2021 international class for the Brewers, Guilarte got a $1 million bonus and was well-revered in the organization. Being a contact hitter with speed for most of his career, Guilarte also showed strong OBP skills walking at over a 13 percent rate for his entire Minor League career.
Entering 2024, Guilarte had zero career home runs, albeit just 433 plate appearances. Through 80 plate appearances in 2024, Guilarte is up to three home runs after a four-hit night that included a home run and a double.
I am not saying it is a breakout, but I am watching Guilarte very closely.
