The Dynasty Digest: May 11, 2023
Chris Clegg runs down everything you need to know for dynasty leagues from Wednesday's action.
Angel Bastardo, RHP, BOS, 20 yo, A+
I will lead the way with Angel Bastardo, who I saw live yesterday. Bastardo is an exciting arm who gets a ton of swing and misses. He had 24 whiffs on Wednesday, the second time he had done that this year. Bastardo has a 44.2 percent whiff rate for the season, which is insane. He has great stuff and misses bats, but is inconsistent with his location and command.
Bastardo struck out nine over five innings on Wednesday and almost got better as the start went on. The first three batters he faced of the game went; fielding error, walk, walk. Greenville made four errors in the field, and Bastardo allowed two earned runs.
Bastardo features a fastball with some lively arm-side run and sits around 93-94 mph. His slider sits in the mid-80s and gets a ton of swings and misses. He seldom throws a changeup, but it shows flashes of being a solid pitch.
Bastardo is not a must-add in most dynasty formats, but he is intriguing in deeper dynasty leagues. If the command comes along, he could soard up boards.
Dalton Rushing, C, LAD, 22 yo, A+
Dalton Rushing mashed two home runs on Wednesday, bringing his season total to seven. His slash line of .284/.462/.602 is quite impressive, and it seems like it is time for Rushing to have a new challenge in Double-A. Rushing seemed like a bit of a pop-up prospect last year at Louisville, but it is important to note that Rushing was behind Henry Davis for most of his collegiate career.
In a way, Rushing almost seems too passive. He is running a 22.8 percent walk rate to a 25.4 percent strikeout rate. His passivity sometimes gets him deep into counts, which causes a higher strikeout rate. He has been on base in all 25 games he has played this year.
With how good his performance has been, backed by the data, I think there is an argument for Dalton Rushing to be the top fantasy-catching prospect for dynasty. His bat is just that good.
Edgar Quero, C, LAA, 20 yo, AA
Edgar Quero got on the board for his first home run of 2023. Last year Quero hit 17 in Low-A as a 19-year-old. Quero just turned 20 in April and got an aggressive assignment in Double-A. The young 20-year-old is slashing .297/.464/.446 with 21 walks and 21 strikeouts.
Quero makes strong in-zone contact and has just an 8.6 percent swinging strike rate. His strike zone recognition is second and plate discipline are elite for his age. He is quite an advanced bat, and if the power continues to develop, Quero could be an elite fantasy catcher. He belongs in a tier with Dalton Rushing.
Jordan Beck, OF, COL, 22 yo, A+
There is probably not a hotter hitter in Minors or all of baseball than Jordan Beck right now. The Rockies drafted Beck out of Tennessee last year with the 38th overall pick, and he is living up to the hype. After hitting 18 home runs in 297 plate appearances at Tennessee with a .986 OPS, Beck hit the ground running in the Minors.
Now in High-A, the 22-year-old is mashing and has seven home runs over his last ten games with a .436/.452/1.077 slash. All 9 of his home runs this season have come over his last 12 games. The power is legit, but the contact skills are still a bit questionable. Beck is running a 67.7 percent contact rate. I think Beck will be a very solid fantasy contributor, but know there are some contact concerns.
