Chris Clegg breaks down everything you need to know from yesterday's MiLB action.
Another day on the grind. I had a fun double header in Greenville after the torrential downpour on Wednesday, and Luis Perales dominated again. I did not write him up again today, but he is healthy now and the stuff looks legit. Perales is easily the best pitching prospect in the Red Sox system.
Enough of Perales ramblings though, we have a lot to talk about, let’s dive in!
MiLB Pitchers
Chase Dollander, RHP, COL, 22, A+
We have talked quite a bit about Dollander this year, and rightfully so, as he continues to dominate. On Thursday, Dollander tossed five innings and allowed two earned runs with most of the damage coming on a leadoff home run by Andrew Pintar. Dollander followed the home run by allowing a walk and two singles before settling in nicely. He finished the day allowing six hits and two walks, but struck out ten batters while generating 23 whiffs.
Dollander’s fastball had his high IVB fastball sitting 95-97, but he had several 98s, routinely sat around 18 inches of IVB, and elevated it well. The curveball showed high spin and a beautiful two-plane break, missing bats at a high rate, sitting in the upper 70s. Dollander also worked a slider with a tight break that plays like a cutter, sitting in the upper 80s. Dollander’s changeup is very underrated and plays very well against left-handed hitters, showing up to 20 inches of horizontal fade.
On the season, Dollander has a 2.59 ERA and 43 strikeouts across 24.1 innings pitched. He has all the tools to successfully pitch in Coors Field and perform at a high level.
Brant Hurter, LHP, DET, 25, AAA
The 6’6” lefty shoved on Thursday, striking out nine batters across five scoreless innings with five hits and one walk allowed. Hurter struck out nine batters and generated 15 whiffs, good for a 38 percent whiff rate. He added 14 more called strikes to land at a 39 percent CSW.
The sweeper shows inconsistent shape but registered up to 15 inches of sweep, which is a highly impressive number. It generated ten whiffs on 15 swings, good for a 67 percent rate. Hurter’s changeup showed up to 16 inches of arm-side run as well. The sinker sits in the low-90s, but he shows good depth and consistent run, showing up to 22 inches of arm-side movement.
While Hurter is not overpowering, he does have some fun stuff. He could pitch in Detroit at some point this year.
