We made it to March! Regular season games will be played this month. But first, we have several more important weeks of spring training.
Welcome to the Dynasty Digest! Baseball is back, and so are we, with our daily reports of everything you need to know from the previous days’ action for you to win your dynasty leagues.
Spring Training is always an interesting time, as box score stats don’t necessarily matter, but I am looking for other things of note. Has a pitcher seen an increase in velo or do they have a new pitch that compliments the arsenal well? Has a hitter simplified their approach, or did they post a new max exit velocity? The little things are much more important than box score stats for Spring Training, and we are going to talk about them. Let’s break down Monday’s action.
Spring Training Standouts From March 2
Bailey Ober, RHP, MIN
Of the pitchers that threw on Saturday, Ober might have been the most impressive. He is already one of the highest-floor arms in baseball due to his command and strike-throwing ability, but now he has seemingly made some tweaks to his arsenal. Ober allowed just one base runner in the three innings of work on Saturday, and it was a home run to Nick Castellanos. Otherwise, he struck out seven batters and displayed a strong fastball.
The fastball jumped nearly two MPH on the 17 fastballs he threw among the 38 total pitches. It also has 2.5 inches more of IVB on the fastball. He also threw a new slider/cutter that was sitting 85-86 mph, and his sweeper was showing increased horizontal movement.
Ober landed 30 of his 38 pitches landed for strikes which is no surprise and the command was impeccable. The fastball was located well up in the zone, the changeup down and away, and the slider/sweeper down and away as well.
Ezequiel Tovar, SS, COL
Tovar might just be the most impressive player in Spring Training to this point. Physically, Tovar has added good weight and looks stronger, and the results are showing. Hitting his second spring home run in five games on Saturday, Tovar’s bomb traveled 425 feet despite having just a 101.3 mph exit velocity.
Tovar’s 2021 season was semi-underwhelming but it is important to remember that he was 21 years old for the the majority of the season. There is a strong chance that Tovar could develop into a 20 home runs bat that could steal 15 bases and post a respectable batting average.
