Chris breaks down everything you need to know from the DSL all the way to the Majors
Hello everyone, happy Thursday. A fun day of MLB and MiLB action on Wednesday to break down. Today, I broke down two Red Sox who dominated yesterday, plus a slew of minor leaguers. Let’s talk about them!
Hitters
Rafael Devers, 3B, BOS, 27, MLB
It is hard to find a hotter hitter on the planet than Devers over the last several weeks. A two home run performance on Wednesday pushed his total to 13 on the year, but nine in his last 20 games. Over that span Devers is also hitting .297/.369/.743 with a 16 percent barrel rate.
Devers has been one of the most consistent hitters in baseball over the last few years. Even in a “down” 2023 he still mashed 33 home runs and his .271 batting average was the lowest since the 2020 shortened season.
Since 2021, Devers has averaged 34 home runs per 650 plate appearances, which is close to his average in each season. The slash line sits at .282/.356/.525. Considering that he is just 27 years old, he probably needs to be considered a top 10 dynasty asset.
Brice Matthews, SS, HOU, 22, A+
Matthews and the Astros were a match made in heaven in last year’s draft as an analytics darling out of Nebraska. During his final collegiate season, Matthews hit 20 home runs and stole 20 bases while slashing .359/.481/.723 and striking out just 20 percent of the time. He has exit velocities as high as 113 mph this year and is an excellent athlete. The 90th percentile exit velocity checked in at an impressive 109.4 mph.
While the contact was inconsistent in his debut in Single-A in 2023(70%), things have taken another step back this year in High-A, as he currently has a 65 percent contact rate.
Matthews had an impressive day on Wednesday, though, and is on a heater as he reached base six times, including two home runs, two singles, and two walks. He even swiped a bag. In 17 games since returning from injury, Matthews is slashing .304/.431/.609 in High-A with four home runs and six stolen bases. Contact is still worth monitoring, but the tools are there.
