The Dynasty Digest: June 5, 2024
Chris breaks down yesterday's MiLB slate of games with detailed player reports.
Another full week of Minor League action got underway on Tuesday and there were a ton of great pitching performances with several bats making noise across all levels. While the pitchers stole the show on Tuesday, we will break them down first.
Let’s get to it!
MiLB Pitchers
Trevor Martin, RHP, TB, 23, A+
I have seen Martin live several times, including last year with Charleston and then in the first full series of the 2024 season. I really did not see this kind of performance from him coming. Martin struck out 14 batters and allowed just one earned run across seven innings of work in the bandbox that is McCormick Field in Asheville.
Martin generated an impressive 20 whiffs and landed 66 percent of his pitches for strikes. Thirty-six percent of his pitches were either called or swinging strikes.
Martin now has a 3.05 ERA on the year and has 78 strikeouts in 59 innings pitched with 13 walks. The 6’5” righty was a dominant college closer who the Rays are developing as a starter, and the results are very promising.
Martin gets a ton of ride on his fastball that sits in the 93-95 range, and he pairs it with a low-80s slider. The changeup is still a massive work in progress and could be the sticking point for Martin being a starter.
Ky Bush, LHP, CHW, 24, AA
A former 45th overall pick in the 2021 draft, Bush has had an up and down career to this point, but has seemed to unlock something with the White Sox. Before you laugh, the White Sox brought in a new development team, especially on the pitching side and many of their arms have taken major steps forward.
After a disastrous 2023 in which Bush posted a 6.91 ERA across 71.2 Double-A innings, he looks like a new arm in 2024. On Tuesday, Bush allowed a season-high three earned runs but still pitched seven strong innings with eight strikeouts and just one walk allowed.
The season-long ERA sits at 2.18, and Bush is striking out over 28 percent of hitters. One of the reasons for the newfound success is his fastball. After sitting at 92 mph last year, Bush is consistently in the 94-96 range this season.
The slider and curveball both flash plus pitches and miss bats with ease. His strike rate is right at the league average of 63 percent, but the nearly 17 percent swinging strike rate is very strong.
