Coby Mayo, 3B, BAL, 22, A+(Rehab)
After spending the week on rehab with High-A Aberdeen, it looks like Mayo is ready to head back to Triple-A. After collecting six hits in four games, Mayo ended the week with a bang on Sunday, hitting two home runs and driving in three batters. This pushes his total to 16 home runs on the year with 32 extra-base hits.
Mayo has some of the best high-end exit velocities in the minors with a 108 mph 90th percentile exit velocity, and he has topped out at 115 mph. His 93 mph average exit velocity is also in elite territory. I don’t think he struggles with contact either, Mayo’s 85 percent in-zone contact is quite strong, and his low chase rate shows his plate discipline.
Mayo can mash and should be back in Triple-A very soon. From there, he could get a crack at the Orioles lineup at some point around the All-Star break.
Axiel Plaz, C, PIT, 18, A
Plaz was featured in our article last week titled “Pick Up These Prospects Now.” In the report I wrote:
Guess who is back again? It is Axiel Plaz former DSL standout in 2022 as a 16 year old who struggled in 2023. Plaz is hitting the cover off the ball in Bradenton and has four home runs in 17 games. The slash line of .226/.317/.472 won’t wow you, but maybe the under-the-hood data will.
Plaz has led the Florida State League since he debuted with a barrel rate at an impressive 16 percent mark. The 104 mph 90th percentile exit velocity is slightly above average for MLB standards, but considering that Plaz is 18, it stands out. The zone-contact rate of 92 percent is elite, but Plaz is pretty aggressive and has a high chase rate of nearly 36 percent.
It is something to watch, but Plaz looks like he is capable of taking off.
Well, Plaz continues to hit and since that article published, he has four hits in three games, including a home run and two hit day on Sunday. Plaz’s home run left the bat at 106 mph and traveled 450 feet. His single, also hard-hit at 97 mph.
The contact skills are still looking quite strong, and his 29.5 percent strikeout rate is not reflective of a 91 percent in-zone contact. He is aggressive and does chase, but still a 75 percent overall contact rate is still well above-average for his age and league.
