The Dynasty Digest: July 10, 2024
Chris Clegg breaks down all the action from the DSL to Triple-A.
Good morning; we are back with another full week of Minor League action leading up to the All-Star break. Hard to believe it is here. but we are already in Mid-July. Today’s Digest features a ton of players with detailed reports from the lowest level of the Minors all the way up to Triple-A.
Enjoy!
MiLB Pitchers
Chase Dollander, RHP, COL, 22, A+
It seems like we talk about Dollander with every start he makes. Tuesday was no different, as he only pitched three innings but struck out nine batters. Yes, all his outs came via strikeout. He allowed two walks and hit a piece, and one earned runs while generating 18 whiffs.
Dollander’s fastball had his high IVB fastball sitting 95-98, but he had several 100s, routinely sat around 18 inches of IVB, and elevated it well. In fact, his last four fastballs came via fastballs at 100 or 101 mph. The curveball showed high spin and a beautiful two-plane break, missing bats at a high rate, sitting in the upper 70s. Dollander also worked a slider with a tight break that plays like a cutter, sitting in the upper 80s. Dollander’s changeup is very underrated and plays very well against left-handed hitters, showing up to 20 inches of horizontal fade.
On the season, Dollander has a 2.83 ERA and 111 strikeouts across 70 innings pitched. He has all the tools to successfully pitch in Coors Field and perform at a high level.
Travis Sykora, RHP, WSH, 20, A
Hello, it's me again. I'm talking about Sykora more as he ascends toward top 100 status. The Nationals knocked this pick out of the park last year in the third round. Sykora already has an advanced body and arsenal despite being only 20 years old, standing at 6’6”/230 with great stuff.
His fastball already sits in the mid-to-upper 90s and has touched 101 mph. His split-change flashes are a plus pitch and sit in the same velocity band as his slider, which missed a lot of bats yesterday.
On Tuesday, Sykora generated 16 whiffs while striking out seven batters across five no-hit innings. This was against a Carolina Mudcats lineup that is easily the best in the Carolina League. He lowered his ERA to 2.78 in the year, with 63 strikeouts in 45 innings. Over his last five starts, an impressive 1.44 ERA with 34 strikeouts to six walks.
