The Dynasty Digest: February 27, 2024
Chris Clegg is back to run down everything you need to know for dynasty leagues from the previous days action.
Welcome back to the Dynasty Digest! Baseball is back, and so are we, with our daily reports of everything you need to know from the previous days’ action for you to win your dynasty leagues.
Spring Training is always an interesting time, as box score stats don’t necessarily matter, but I am looking for other things of note. Has a pitcher seen an increase in velo or do they have a new pitch that compliments the arsenal well? Has a hitter simplified their approach, or did they post a new max exit velocity? The little things are much more important than box score stats for Spring Training, and we are going to talk about them. Let’s break down Monday’s action.
Spring Training Standouts From February 26
Spencer Arrighetti, RHP, HOU
Arrighetti was sharp in his spring debut, firing two scoreless innings with one hit allowed and three strikeouts. He needed just 32 pitches, throwing 68.8 percent for strikes, which was huge.
Mixing in his four-seam, slider, and changeup, Arrighetti generated a 35 percent whiff rate and a 34 percent CSW. The fastball sat around 93 mph, where he was last season, and when located up, he played very well.
The slider location was inconsistent, but Arrighetti buried most of his changeups well. The slider did show nice sweeping action, generating 15 inches consistently. The changeup showed inconsistent shape but did have several of them register 15 inches of fade.
Arrighetti is near MLB ready and could see time in the Astros’ rotation this season.
Eury Perez, RHP, MIA
Eury Perez came out doing Eury Perez things as he dominated with his fastball sitting at 98 mph and topping out at 99.3 mph. The pitch had increased IVB from last season and over four inches more horizontal movement than it did in 2023.
The slider had more sweeping action, but the most notable thing about the outing was Perez’s curveball, which was six mph lower than it had been last year. The spin rate was up significantly, as was his vertical movement, which increased by 16 inches from 2023.
It is weird to see a pitch change as drastically as Perez’s curveball did, but it is a small sample, so it is something to watch moving forward.
