The Dynasty Digest: April 22, 2024
Chris Clegg breaks down everything you need to know from yesterday's Minor League action.
Today, we will just look at Minor League standouts as I spend way too much time debating over ranking spots for the prospect and dynasty list that will be updated this week. Rankings updates always take a ton of time as I try to dive into data and watch film for as many players as I can to see if any tangible changes have been made.
Anyways, you will get the rankings updates soon, which will be graduating from Excel/Google Sheets to filter rankings on a website. Extciting news! But let us get to Sunday’s standouts.
MiLB Hitters
Spencer Jones, OF, NYY, 22, AA
Jones hit his first home run of the year on Sunday, and I know you are probably thinking, how was it his first home run? It is April 22. It was just Jones's sixth game back from a neck injury and he collected three hits and stole two bases.
The power comes easy, as you might expect from a 6’7” frame, but the long limbs do create some swing and miss. The 94 mph average exit velocity in 2023 puts him among the best hitters in the minors in terms of exit velocity alone. Surprisingly, he managed just 16 home runs, mainly due to a ground ball north of 47 percent. Jones will need to hit the ball at better angles to make the most of his power.
With long legs and strides, Jones was able to steal 43 bases last season. He does not have quick acceleration, but he gets faster as he gets going. Jones clocked an 11.00-second triple from a game I was at in Greenville. For reference, Corbin Carroll posted the fastest-ever home to third time at 10.75 seconds.
The upside is there for a number one overall prospect profile if all clicks.
