The Dynasty Digest: August 24, 2023
Chris Clegg breaks down all of Wednesday's action with a dynasty fantasy baseball twist.
Darius Vines, RHP, ATL, 25, AAA
Vines has only thrown 33.1 innings this year due to injury, but has continued to progress and looks excellent in Triple-A. He completed seven innings on Wednesday, allowing two earned runs and striking out five while not issuing a walk.
His fastball is not overly dominant, as it sits in the low-90s to high-80s with decent run. His changeup is his bread and butter, though, as he gets a ton of arm side fade. He also mixes a cutter and slider, and while he likely won’t overpower anyone, Vines can be a useful big-league arm.
Alexander Canario, OF, CHC, 23, AAA
Canario is an exciting player that I am still trying to figure out what to do with in dynasty leagues. He mashed 37 home runs in 2022 before taking a huge fall and injuring his shoulder and ankle, tripping over the first base bag in the Dominican Winter League.
In 30 Triple-A games this year, Canario is slashing .275/.348/.492 with six home runs, which includes a three-hits game with a home run and double on Wednesday.
Canario hits the ball hard, as shown by his 106.5 mph 90th percentile exit velocity, and the good news is his contact numbers have improved this season as he has an 80 percent zone-contact and a 70 percent overall contact rate. Those numbers are slightly below average, but with Canario’s power, it should play.
Orelvis Martinez, SS, TOR, 21, AAA
Martinez continues to swing a hot bat and has improved his numbers since joining Triple-A Buffalo. In 98 games between Double-A and Triple-A, Martinez is slashing .240/.340/.494 with 23 home runs.
Martinez has big power, and while there are some questionable contact skills, those numbers have improved this year. He has been more patient and plays up in OBP formats.
After fading Orelvis Martinez for a while, he is firmly in my top 100 now due to the changes he has made.
