The Dynasty Digest: August 23, 2023

Chris Clegg breaks down Tuesday's action including names like Hunter Goodman, Evan Carter, Bubba Chandler, Cristian Mena and more.

Hunter Goodman, C/INF/OF, COL, 23, AAA

Goodman might be on the verge of a call-up to Colorado if he keeps raking as he has since being moved to Triple-A. There has never been any denying the power, as Goodman blasted 36 home runs last year and is already up to 30 this year after a two-home run game on Tuesday.

There are certainly concerns about the swing-and-miss issues, and in his 11 Triple-A games, Goodman has struck out 32 percent of the time. The interesting thing is Goodman has made respectable contact all year, posting a 72 percent for the season, and in Triple-A, albeit a small sample, Goodman has a 93 percent zone contact rate. It does come with a relatively high 40 percent chase rate, but if Goodman can make consistent contact on the pitches in the zone, he should be fine.

The power is undeniable, and he only benefits from a BABIP boost in Coors Field.

Evan Carter, OF, TEX, 20, AA

Despite missing time with a wrist/hand injury that certainly zapped some of his power, Carter has still posted a solid season in which he has 12 home runs and 21 stolen bases in 91 games. A 3-hit night on Tuesday raised his slash to .281/.415/.456 on the season, but there are still questions regarding his home run output.

Carter has just one home run in the month of August and has just 29 extra-base hits on the season. He is a patient hitter and makes plenty of contact, so there is no denying that Carter could be a strong batting average and even better OBP asset. The fantasy upside is still to be determined. If Carter can be a consistent 15-17 home run bat, there’s excellent value here. But, in my recent prospect update, I dropped Carter closer to 30 overall due to questions about his power output.

Bubba Chandler, RHP, PIT, 20, A+

When Bubba Chandler is on, he’s incredible, but when the command is not there, he really struggles. When I saw him two weeks ago, it was one of those struggle games in which he could not find the strike zone and walked three batters in three innings. But, last night, Chandler was on, having the longest start of his career as he fired seven scoreless innings without a walk. He had a 68 percent strike rate, 12 whiffs, and a 30 percent CSW.

Chandler features a 97 mph fastball with up to 20 inches of IVB at the top of the zone with a ton of arm side run. It’s a deadly pitch when he commands it well. His slider has a ton of sweeping action, and his changeup gets up to 90 mph and plays exceptionally well off the fastball with nice fade and depth to it.

The arsenal gives Chandler plenty of upside if he can find his command.
