Let’s discuss all the important things to know for dynasty leagues from Tuesday’s games from both the Majors and Triple-A.
Michael Soroka, RHP, ATL
Michael Soroka made his return to the mound for Triple-A Gwinnett and fired 3.2 innings with four hits and one earned runs allowed. He did not walk a batter and struck out three. The only blemish was a pitch that Ryan O’Hearn crushed into the seats for a home run.
People forget how good Soroka was at a young age. He made a his debut late in 2018 as a 20-year-old. Between 2018 and 2019, he pitched to a 2.79 ERA in 200 innings.
Soroka’s sinker velocity was up 1.6 mph from the last time he pitched, 2020. It was about one mph up from 2019 when he pitched a full season. His slider also was up 2.1 mph from 2020, but actually pretty comparable to 2019 numbers.
Soroka showed a really good feel for spin and had a 71 percent whiff rate on his slider. He threw his changeup just seven times, but it generated two whiffs on four swings.
Soroka is a must-add for dynasty leagues if available and someone I would be targeting in trades. He could easily be a top 100 dynasty asset by seasons end that will not cost you close to that.
Dylan Dodd, LHP, ATL
Atlanta just continues to be a factory in producing pitchers. Dodd had an impressive debut against the Cardinals in which he pitched five innings, allowing six hits and just one earned run. He did not walk a batter and struck out three.
Dodd threw just 73 pitches, generating a 71 percent strike rate. His fastball averaged just 92.2 mph but he commands it so well that it causes it to play up. Dodd’s slider generated a 47 percent whiff rate and generated a 38 percent chase rate.
You have to imagine Dodd earned another start and could be a staple in the Braves rotation all season.
Lenyn Sosa, SS, CHW
Lenyn Sosa hit two home runs on Tuesday and drove in four runs. He had four hard-hit balls including 103.8 and 103.9 mph shots. Sosa had a breakout season in 2022 where he hit 23 home runs and slashed .315/.369/.511 between Double and Triple-A. It earned him a call to the Majors where he was a bit disappointing.
Sosa is off to a hot start and it is encouraging to see that the progress has extended beyond just last season. Sosa could find playing time at second base for the White Sox by mid-season if Elvis Andrus does not work out.
Zac Gallen, RHP, ARI
Is it time to be concerned about Zac Gallen? He did not look great this spring and through two starts in the regular season, Gallen has a 7.59 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP. The strikeouts are not there and his stuff doesn’t appear to be either.
Gallen’s biggest problem in spring is that his velocity was down. Yesterday his velocity was back up to normal, but his pitch movement was not quite there. According to Eno Sarris’s Stuff+ model, his stuff is actually up a tick. I would not be overly concerned about about Gallen at this time. He should rebound and get back to normal self before long.
Hayden Wesneski, RHP, CHC
Hayden Wesneski likely disappointed fantasy managers who were hoping for more in his first start of the season. After a strong spring, his 4.2 innings pitched with 6 hits, three earned runs and two walks was not ideal. Wesneski did allow two home runs and struck out four.
Wesneski’s start was not as bad as the line may suggest. He did get squeezed a bit on some called balls and was not able to close out some batters he had down 0-2. He made a couple mistakes on the home runs but overall I thought he pitched fine and I was impressed with his arsenal. Buy into Wesneski if others are down on him.
