The Daily Dugout Report - September 9, 2026

Its the final week of Double-A for the regular season and the lower levels are in the playoffs. There is still plenty happenign that is worth knowing so we will still bring you top notch coverage.

That does mean we might see some prospects get a bump from High-A to Double-A to get them an extra week of action and the possibility of more players going to Triple-A as they run an extra week beyond Triple-A.

Regardless, there are still things to be taken away from what happens over the final week of the season. Let’s dive in.

Vance Honeycutt, OF, Baltimore Orioles (AA)

Why The Performance Matters:

Vance Honeycutt has been hitting well to end the season, and while I don’t buy this sudden ability to make contact, it is worth noting that maybe you can capitalize on this buzz. Someone is going to write something, or have AI write it for them, because there are unfortunately people out there charging for a product that AI writes, saying Vance Honeycutt’s end of the season could be him figuring it out. And while that is most certainly a possibility, it’s not something I buy.

Sometimes these toolsheds have a hot month or two, and well, that seems to be what is going on for Vance Honeycutt. As of July 1st, he is hitting .264/.381/.552 with a 30% strikeout rate and a 13% walk rate. But there is some value here for you to mine if you still roster Honeycutt at this point.

He should be an easy sell-high candidate, and maybe you can utilize this to get an asset that will help your major league team. Even a reliever has more value than Vance Honeycutt as currently constructed. But I also think this could be an avenue to get a prospect who had a down season, and try and do a classic buy-low, sell-high sort of situation. Honeycutt is fun, but I just don’t think the guy can hit. - RW

Daniel Eagen, RHP, St. Louis Cardinals (AA)

Why The Performance Matters:

I really, really hope you held onto Daniel Eagen because ever since he left the Diamondbacks org, he has been arguably the best-performing pitching prospect in the minors.

Ever since coming to the Cardinals organization, Eagen has been on one. The strikeout rate has ticked up, the walk rate has ticked down, the ground-ball rate has ticked up, and the homers have ticked down. Everything you want to see with Daniel Eagen has been happening. He still is relatively the same guy, it’s fastball up, breaking ball down, and he is an extreme fly-ball guy. Just leaving Amarillo has done wonders for him, as he is pitching in a more normal ballpark where every fly ball doesn’t have a chance to leave the yard. 

I do think, relatively speaking, the Cardinals haven’t done too much for Eagen yet. The results with Eagen have been encouraging; he has collected 20+ swings and misses in three of his last four outings, and has collected 10+ strikeouts in those three games. Eagen is ending the season strongly, and looks poised to fly up rankings this offseason. - RW
