The Prospect Report

🚀 Standout of The Day

Malachi Witherspoon, RHP, Detroit Tigers (A)

Stats: 5 IP/3 H/1 ER/1 BB/10 K, 22 Whiffs

Why The Performance Matters:

The Witherspoon name might ring a bell as Malachi’s twin brother, Kyson, was drafted in the first round by the Red Sox. It was not much longer until Malachi heard his name called in the second round of the 2025 draft.

After an up-and-down start to his pro career in Single-A, Witherspoon turned in the best start of his career. Allowing just four total base runners in five innings of work, Witherspoon struck out ten batters. He generated an impressive 22 whiffs, good for a 55 percent clip, and added 12 more called strikes for a 47 percent CSW. Witherspoon landed 72 percent of his pitches for strikes.

Witherspoon works his fastball 96-96 mph on average, touching 99 mph with a flat VAA. The shape does not stand out, having 13 inches of IVB from a 5’3” release height, but Witherspoon still creates a flat approach angle. He also mixes in a sinker with 15 inches of arm-side run and good IVB separation from the four-seam.

From a secondary standpoint, Witherspoon mixes in several breaking balls with an 88 mph cutter, which plays more like a slider, a mid-80s slider with good depth, and a two-plane curveball at 83 mph. Witherspoon threw an upper-80s changeup in college but has not featured it often this season.

Fantasy Spin:

The arm talent is there for Witherspoon. Despite the higher ERA, he has a sub-3 xFIP, which is encouraging. The command and control have also been much better than we have previously seen. There is an opportunity to get in on Witherspoon for cheap, and I would consider rostering him where 400-500 prospects are rostered. -CC
