The Prospect Report

🚀 Standout of The Day

Josiah Hartshorn, OF/1B, Chicago Cubs (A)

Stats: 2/4 2B, HR, 4 RBI

Why The Performance Matters:

Hartshorn blasted his fifth home run of the year on Thursday and added a double to bring his total there to five as well. He is up to four stolen bases and has a slash of .279/.449/.477 with a 22 percent walk rate to a 14 percent walk rate.

Hitting the ball quite hard for his age, Hartshorn is running an average exit velocity north of 91 mph with a 90th percentile exit velocity that is plus for his age. Already blasting a home run as hard as 111.5 mph, he looks the part.

Not only that, but Hartshorn is showing one of the best approaches in the minors with plus contact skills. Running a chase rate around 10 percent, Hartshorn also has an overall contact rate of 84 percent with an elite zone contact rate.

The skills at the plate are no doubt there and Harsthorn should only get stronger over time. He entered the top 100 last month, but it looks like he could rise to around 75 overall with graduations. -CC

Nolan Perry, RHP, Toronto Blue Jays (A+)

Stats: 5 IP/3 H/0 ER/3 BB/10 K

Why The Performance Matters:

We first wrote about Perry after his 12-strikeout performance in early April. I wrote that I was not familiar with the name until the outing. Now, Perry looks to be a household name soaring up boards.

A 2022 12th-round pick out of high school, the 6-foot-2-inch righty pitched 38 innings on the complex in 2023 and then 46 innings in Single-A in 2024 before having Tommy John Surgery. Perry returned to the mound this year and has pitched well all season.

Now in High-A, Perry turned in his best performance there, striking out ten batters across five scoreless innings. He walked three and allowed three hits, but did not allow a run. It lowered Perry’s ERA on the season to 1.45 across 31 innings and pairs it with a 43 percent strikeout rate to an 8.6 percent walk rate.

The fastball works around 94 mph and tops at 96 mph, creating a good ride and a flat VAA. Working between 18 and 19 inches of IVB from a 5’6” slot will play for sure, and the VAA of -4.2 is quite strong.

Perry manipulates his slider well into a couple of shapes and works the harder, more cutter-type shape at 87 mph, with the other slider having more depth at 84 mph. There is a strong two-plane curveball that gets over 13 inches of sweeping action. Perry has a mid-80s changeup that he does not throw often.

So I guess if you read this far, you might ask, is Perry legit? It seems a lot more legit than it did in mid-April. His strike rate sits at 64 percent the bat missing has remained, even against High-A hitters, as the swinging strike rate has jumped to 21 percent there.

How high should you value him? Maybe top 200-250 at this point. -CC
