The Prospect Report
🚀 Standout of The Day
Colt Emerson, SS, Seattle Mariners
Stats: 2/5, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI, 3 K
Notable Data: 101.6 MPH EV
Why The Performance Matters:
Colt Emerson was left off the Mariners' Opening Day roster after JP Crawford landed on the 10-day IL with a shoulder injury — so the good people of Seattle are getting Leo Rivas at shortstop instead. Colt did strike out three times in this game, but he also hit a ball 408 feet off an 80 mph curveball from Kohl Drake, so there's that.
Emerson carries a bit of prospect fatigue at this point, and he's never going to be a top-5 shortstop — but in one of the deepest positional groups in baseball, he's got a real case for top 10-12. He makes a ton of contact, a swing tweak midway through last year unlocked more impact, and there's no pitch type that gives him noticeable trouble.
Fantasy Spin:
We should see Colt Emerson fairly quickly regardless, but part of me wonders, if Rivas struggles early and Crawford's shoulder lingers, whether Emerson gets the call sooner than expected. When he does come up, he can provide some solid power and a pinch of speed. Chris had him at a 90th percentile outcome of 25 homers and 15 stolen bases on the Mariners list, which would be a great outcome for a full season.
Emerson could also pick up some multi-position eligibility early in his career, which makes sense given the Mariners presumably want to keep Crawford at short when healthy. Colt could see time at second and even third, especially with Brendan Donovan offering positional flexibility across the infield.
