The Prospect Report

🚀 Standout of The Day

Cooper Ingle, C, Cleveland Guardians (AAA)

Stats: 4/4 2B, 3 HR

Why The Performance Matters:

Ingle really has nothing left to prove and should have been up a month ago in Cleveland, but the Guardians opted to trade for Patrick Bailey, who has been terrible. In 147 plate appearances this season Bailey has a .162/.218/.243 slash with two home runs and a 29 wRC+. He is litterally unplayable.

Meanwhile, Ingle is slashing .304/.436/.590 with 12 home runs in Triple-A after the impressive three homer day. The contact rates are high-end, checking in at 85 percent overall and over 90 percent in the zone. Ingle has chased at just a 17.5 percent clip this season. While Bailey is the better defender, Ingle’s bat is just so much better.

I would not expect a ton of power from Ingle in the Majors as he has a max exit velocity of 107.2 mph, but he does have good launch angles and consistently hits the ball hard, creating barrels. The 90th percentile exit velocity is respectable at 103 mph. Ingle needs to be promoted today. -CC

David Shields, LHP, Kansas City Royals (A+)

Stats: 5 IP/5 H/3 ER/1 BB/10 K

Why The Performance Matters:

Shields was young last season, spending the season as an 18-year-old in Single-A. He pitched extremely well and flew up prospect rankings. The Royals aggressively pushed Shields to High-A this year, and he has excelled. Thursday, Shields matched his career high strikeout total at 10, which he has done in back-to-back starts. He has walked just one batter over the last 10.2 innings.

The fastball sits in the low 90s, but has ticked. During his senior season, he lived more in the 88-90 range and topped around 91-92 mph. Shields is now topping out closer to 94 mph while working 90-92 mph regularly. The fastball gets solid arm-side movement and can create good riding action up in the zone from his slot.

A slider is Shields’ most secondary pitch, sitting in the low-80s. It has nice depth and long horizontal movement, and Shields has shown the ability to get whiffs against lefties and righties with the pitch. He did a great job locating it on the inner and outer halves of the plate last night.

The changeup is a third offering, but as it continues to develop, it could become a solid platoon-neutralizing pitch against right-handed batters. It sits in the 79-82 mph range with good fading action.

A couple of bad starts should not make you shy away from Shields. He has a strikeout-to-walk rate north of 20 percent and an FIP of 3.88. This is a fun arm that seems like a high-probability starting pitcher. -CC
