Jason Schiavone, C/1B, Houston Astros

Line: 3/4 2 HR

Why The Performance Matters:

Schiavone burst onto the scene early in the year as he has 17 home runs in his first 168 plate appearances in Asheville. The slash was insanely good as well, but he has cooled off a bit in Double-A. After two home runs on both Tuesday and Wednesday, Schiavone is up to 29 between both levels in 463 plate appearances with 26 stolen bases.

Under the hood, Schiavone has some of the best exit velocity data in baseball. The 90th percentile exit velocity is north of 110 mph and the hard-hit rate is above 55 percent. The chase rate is even strong at 20 percent.

The problem comes with contact. The zone contact rate sits around 74 percent is a major issue, as is the overall mark at 66 percent. He has struck out in 30 percent of his plate appearances this year.

There is no denying the power, though, and it is interesting that Schiavone gets no love despite players like Andrew Fischer being pushed heavily. Yes, Fischer is a year younger, but Schiavone has better underlying data in nearly every category. -CC

Jason Gilman, LHP, Boston Red Sox (A+)

Why The Performance Matters:

A 2025 16th-round pick out of Division 3 Kean University, Gilman looks like an incredible scouting find by the Red Sox. After ten strikeouts across 5.1 scoreless innings last night, Gilman has his ERA down to 3.19, and his strikeout rate up to nearly 35 percent. Sure, the walks are an issue at 13.4 percent, but the strike rate is north of 61 percent, and it was encouraging to see Gilman walk just one on Wednesday.

The lefty spins the ball exceptionally well. The fastball works 91-93 mph, but has solid traits from the left side, generating 20 inches of IVB on average. Lower-level hitters have struggled with it, but the location up really gives hitters fits.

The splitter that Gilman throws is nasty, having late drop and good arm-side movement while working 83-84 mph. The slider has good carry at 84 mph, and Gilman also has a long-running sweeper in the upper-70s with 15 inches of sweep.

If Gilman throws strikes more consistently and adds a tick or two of velocity, which is possible, he suddenly becomes a viable prospect. He is worth an add in deeper leagues. -CC
