The Prospect Report

🚀 Standout of The Day

Liomar Martinez, RHP, Miami Marlins

Line: 6 IP/1 H/0 ER/0 BB/9 K

Why The Performance Matters:

Martinez's surface numbers do not look great this year as he has a 5.74 ERA across 89 innings. The 13.4 percent walk rate is also a major issue, but it does come with a 33 percent strikeout rate and performances that keep getting better.

Since the All-Star break, Martinez has a 3.75 ERA with a 36.5 percent strikeout rate to a 7.3 percent walk rate. He just turned 21 years old; Martinez has strong stuff for his age.

His four-seam fastball sits around 93 mph, but it comes with 16-17 inches of IVB from a 5’4” release height, which is insane. He creates a flat VAA and has over seven feet of extension, which allows the pitch to play up.

Mixing in an upper-70s two-plane curveball with a slider that has 11 inches of sweep, Martinez keeps hitters on their toes. He even throws a pretty nasty splitter in the mid-80s. The sweeper is a distinct pitch from the curve and works 4 mph harder with heavy glove-side movement.

Martinez does have strong stuff, and if the command continues to improve, watch out. He will rise in rankings quickly. -CC

Franklin Primera, C, Boston Red Sox

Line: 3/6 2 2B, HR

Why The Performance Matters:

After signing for $10k in September 2024, Primera debuted in the DSL last year and posted a solid .333/.465/.430 slash, but hit just one run; he did have ten doubles. He entered the spring and showed out, and the success has carried into the complex season.

His stint at the complex was highly impressive as Primera slashed .427/.549/.718 with eight home runs. After struggling out of the gate in Single-A, the young 19-year-old has broken out in a huge way. Since the All-Star break, Primera is slashing .429/.556/.727 with nine doubles and four home runs.

He has run impressive contact rates with an overall mark north of 80 percent and an in-zone rate near 88 percent. The chase rate has hovered around 24 percent. This is even with some struggles in Single-A.

From a power perspective, there are certainly reasons to buy the power jump. In tracked games this year, Primera has an average exit velocity around 90 mph and a 90th percentile exit velocity around 104 mph. Pair that with strong launch angles and you will create plenty of barrels. Primera looks like a top 100 fantasy prospect. -CC
