The Prospect Report

🚀 Standout of The Day

Joseph Dzierwa, LHP, Baltimore Orioles (A+)

Stats: 5 IP/4 H/1 ER/1 BB/9 K

Why The Performance Matters:

Dzierwa, pronounced (Jer-Wuh), made our preseason pitchers who could breakout article, and so far that has looked like a good pick. Turning in one of the best starts of his young pro career last night, Dzierwa punched out nine batters across five innings of one-run ball. He allowed just two hits and a walk and generated a daily best, 20 whiffs.

The start gives Dzierwa 23 innings pitched across four starts this year, having a 2.35 ERA with a 30 percent strikeout rate to just a 6.8 percent walk rate. The mechanics are clean, and Dzierwa has done a tremendous job of not only missing bats but also keeping batters off base.

Leaning heavily on his fastball, Dzierwa lands it for strikes often and locates well. While the velocity did not overpower anyone in college, sitting 92 mph, it has ticked up, sitting between 93 and 94 mph. Dzierwa creates average IVB from his 5’5” release height and nearly 14 inch of arm-side movement.

Dzierwa’s best swing and miss pitch is a heavy fading changeup that has good depth and sits in the low-80s with 14 inches of fade. The slider has good depth and looks like a curveball at times, sitting in the mid-to-upper 70s. Dzierwa’s cutter sits around 84 mph and has good ride to it.

Fantasy Spin:

Dzierwa throws from a very cross-body delivery, but he repeats well and creates a tough arm slot for hitters. The stuff looks quite good and Dzierwa is rising quickly. I pushed him near 200 in my rankings, but I might need to move him up more.

I would consider adding Dzierwa in leagues that roster 150 prospects. We do need to see him against better competition, so a promotion to Double-A could be in order quickly. -CC
