The Prospect Report

🚀 Standout of The Day

Cole Mathis, CI, Chicago Cubs

Stats: 4/5 2 HR, 2B, 4 RBI

Why The Performance Matters:

In his junior season at College of Charleston, Mathis mashed 14 home runs and slashed .335/.472/.650. The data was excellent, as he posted a 90 mph average exit velocity and a 108 mph 90th-percentile exit velocity. Not only did Mathis scorch baseballs, but he also makes a ton of contact, having an 89 percent in-zone rate and an 84 percent overall mark. Factor in an elite chase rate of 16 percent, and you are really cooking. The Cubs liked Mathis enough to draft him 54th overall in the 2024 Draft. It still feels like we don’t have a great feel for who Mathis is as a player. Injuries have wreaked havoc on his career, and Mathis entered 2026 with just 128 career plate appearances.

The start to 2026 could not be going any better, despite Mathis still being in Single-A. It is time for a promotion to High-A now. Blasting two home runs and winding up a triple shy of the cycle on Wednesday, Mathis is now up to six home runs in 11 games and has his slash line up to .325/.481/.850.

It looks like a breakout is happening, but honestly, we need to see Mathis in High-A and probably even Double-A. He is a player I liked in the draft, but the injuries have left us with questions about who the player really is.

Fantasy Spin:
Showing above-average exit velocities and good bat speed, Mathis has power upside. The approach is one of his better assets, as he runs low chase rates. The contact is strong and is up north of 86 percent this season, which is encouraging.

The recipe for success is there for Mathis to be a solid corner infielder. He just needs to show he can handle pitching at higher levels. Right now Mathis looks like an add in 300 prospects rostered until we see more. -CC
