The Prospect Report
🚀 Standout of The Day
Jose Fernandez, 3B, Arizona Diamondbacks
Stats: 3/4 2 HR/4 RBI
Notable Pitch Data: 104.2 and 101.6 mph HR, with 79 mph bat speed
Why The Performance Matters:
Jose Fernandez made his MLB Debut on Tuesday night, and it was quite memorable. Blasting two home runs, Fernandez became just the eighth player in MLB history to hit two home runs in his debut, which is crazy considering Chase DeLauter did it just five days earlier.
In his first big league at-bat in the second inning, Fernandez beat out an infield grounder to third base. Returning to the plate in the fourth inning, still against Casey Mize, Fernandez blasted a 408-foot home run that left the bat with a 104.2 mph exit velocity. To close out a spectacular debut, Fernandez, facing off against Kenley Jansen, blasted a three-run home run to give the Diamondbacks the lead. That swing gave him his second batted ball with a 79 mph swing speed, and the home run traveled 409 feet.
Not only is it extremely rare for a player to perform like this during his MLB debut, but the home runs were not cheap shots. The swing looks legit, and Fernandez showed off a solid frame that looks like a big leaguer.
Fantasy Spin:
The question is, is Fernandez legit and worth you blowing FAAB or a high waiver claim for in your leagues? The answer is probably, yes, it is worth a shot.
Fernandez was called up from Triple-A Reno on Monday after Pavin Smith went on the injured list. Signing back in February 2021 as a 17-year-old, Fernandez has always been young for each Minor League level. He broke out last year in Double-A Amarillo, hitting 17 home runs, while slashing .272/.321/.454. He showed improved contact last season, running above-average contact rates, but the approach is hyper-aggressive, and Fernandez is prone to chasing.
Heading into the 2026 spring, Fernandez showed out in his 26 plate apperances, hitting three home runs and slashing .280/.308/.840. He registered batted balls up to 111 mph, and his 18 BBE averaged 100 mph in terms of exit velocity. The chase rate was still high, but Fernandez did run a 91 percent zone contact rate in the small sample.
Fernandez is the first true pop-up this MLB season that will warrant a lot of attention when it comes to adds for fantasy. The power is not going to sustain, and people are going to point heavily at his Spring Training 90th percentile exit velocity, which consists of two batted balls. The contact is still a question mark.
So, can Fernandez build on this? Absolutely. He’s 22 years old. Is he worth blowing your entire FAAB budget for? Probably not. I think it's a situation where you pick him up where you can, and you are optimistic that he gives you a few good weeks before coming back down from orbit.
So, what would I bid for him? Maybe 5-8 percent of your budget and hope for the best. If you miss him, I dont think you are missing out on the next superstar. -CC
