Tampa Bay Rays Top Prospects for 2026

1. Theo Gillen, OF, 20, 6’2”/195, AA (Prev Rank: 2)

2026 Update

Gillen has seen his exit velocity data take a huge leap as he is up near a 107 mph 90th percentile with a chase rate of 22 percent. The zone contact rate has improved all season, and Gillen has plus speed. He currently has a .327/.431/.581 slash with 16 home runs and 36 stolen bases.

Gillen was a buzzy prep name last summer and wound up being selected 18th overall by the Rays. Labrum surgery limited Gillen during his final few seasons of high school ball, and a calf injury kept him out for most of April. Gillen looks healthy now and is swinging the bat exceptionally well.

Having filled out his frame, Gillen has a strong lower half in his 6’2” frame and still has a little projection left. Gillen has good balance at the plate, strong barrel control, and a good point of impact. He sprays the ball to all fields well and is showing improved contact as the season has worn on.

In 324 plate appearances this year, Gillen slashed .267/.433/.387 with five home runs and 36 stolen bases. Gillen knows the strike zone well. His 34 percent swing was one of the lowest in baseball, but he chased just 15 percent of pitches out of the zone. He legit averaged one swing per plate appearance when I saw him multiple times this year. Getting into deep pitchers counts is not always great, but I genuinely felt like Gillen knew the strike zone better than the umpires.

Gillen hit the ball respectably hard, having a 103 mph 90th percentile exit velocity. He added some loft and dropped the ground ball rate by ten percentage points while making respectable contact. There is room for growth, but Gillen made contact on 82 percent of swings in the zone.

The athlete is plus or better, and Gillen is a legit threat on the base path.
