Spring Training Prospect Watch
🚀 Standout of The Day
Leo De Vries, SS, Athletics
Stats: 2/4 2 HR, 6 RBI
Notable Data: 102 mph HR, 104 MPH HR
Spring Line: .385/.429/.615 2 HR/3 SB
Why The Performance Matters:
De Vries had a massive day at the plate on Sunday, blasting two home runs, including a grand slam. While it was De Vries first two home runs of the spring he has turned in an impressive performance and added the home runs to his three stolen bases thus far. The slash line sits at .385/.429/.615 with a 17.9 percent strikeout rate to a seven percent walk rate.
Splitting time between High-A and Double-A as an 18-year-old in 2025, De Vries posted a .255/.355/.451 slash line with 15 home runs and 51 extra-base hits, De Vries also swiped 11 bases. Most of his production came in Double-A, where he hit five of his home runs in just 103 plate appearances while putting up an impressive .910 OPS.
The underlying data were strong, and De Vries consistently posted exit velocities over 105 mph, with a 90th-percentile exit velocity that increased throughout the year. He gets the ball in the air often, having an air percentage of around 68 percent. The ability to pull the ball in the air led to an impressive xwOBAcon north of .400.
De Vries’ overall contact rate improved all season and ended the year just shy of 80 percent. De Vries began to show more aggression this year, while maintaining a low chase rate. He elevates and pulls the ball with ease, and the ability to manipulate the barrel and control are top of the line for his age.
Fantasy Spin:
De Vries will spend the entire 2026 season as a 19-year-old. Some have speculated whether he will make his MLB debut in 2026, but it does not seem likely. He should begin the year in Double-A again and finish out in Triple-A, leaving a 2027 debut as a 20-year-old on the table. Could De Vries be the top prospect in baseball after Konnor Griffin and Kevin McGonigle graduate witha step forward this year. A step forward in exit velocities would go long way in continuing to improve his prospect status. -CC
