Spring Training Prospect Watch
🚀 Standout of The Day
Jack Wenninger, RHP, New York Mets
Stats: 3 IP/3 H/0 ER/0 BB/5 K
Notable Data: 11 Whiffs, 78% Whiff on Changeup, 96 mph FB with 16 IVB
Spring Line: 6.2 IP/2.92 ERA/31% K
Why The Performance Matters:
Wenninger shoved again and has looked the part this spring of a top 100 prospect. He struck out five batters across three scoreless innings. He did not issue a walk and allowed just three hits while striking out five batters. More impressively, Wenninger generated an impressive 11 whiffs, with seven of them coming on the changeup.
Last season, Wenninger tossed an impressive 135.2 innings with a 2.92 ERA and a 26.4 percent strikeout rate and walked 7.6 percent of the Double-A hitters he faced. The continued strong performance has him looking ready to be an MLB starting pitcher.
His fastball has continued to trend up from where it was in college, sitting 94-95 mph and touching 98 at times. Yesterday, in the three-inning stint, Wenninger sat at 96 mph. Wenninger throws two variations in a four-seam and two-seam, with the four-seam having 17 inches of IVB from his high 6’5” release height. The sinker has relatively high IVB as well, but has 15 inches of arm-side run versus just ten on the four-seam.
The changeup is Wenninger’s best secondary, sitting in the low-to-mid 80s with a nice depth and fading action. Having the 78 percent whiff rate on it yesterday stands out as well as a 50 percent CSW. Wenninger threw a mid-80s sweeper with a ton of depth yesterday, which probably classifies more as a two-plane curveball.
Fantasy Spin:
Wenninger is rising quickly. He looks like a top 100 prospect and one that is ready to pitch in the Majors. The Mets have a ton of depth at starting pitcher, but the reality is, outside of Freddy Peralta and Nolan McLean, the rest of the projected rotation are not locks. Jonah Tong should lock up a spot, but Wenninger could sneak in and provide meaningful innings in 2026. He is a major helium buy right now. -CC
