Spring Training Dynasty Notes: March 23
Chris Clegg breaks down all of Thursday's action from a dynasty perspective.
If you haven’t already, be sure to check out my updated prospect rankings, where I rank 556 prospects for dynasty leagues:
Garrett Mitchell, OF, MIL
Garrett Mitchell looks fine upon returning from injury. He went two-for-three on Thursday and looks dialed in to take the centerfield job in Milwaukee.
Mitchell is hitting .333 this spring and is lifting the ball more as he has three home runs in 24 at-bats. He has always hit the ball hard and shown big raw power in batting practice. Lifting the ball is the most important thing for him. We know the speed is there too. Mitchell posted the fastest home-to-first-time baseball last year at 4.01 seconds.
I am in on a Garrett Mitchell breakout in 2023.
Brady Singer, RHP, KC
Everyone seems to think Brady Singer hit his peak last year and can’t repeat his performance. Singer finished 2022 with a 3.23 ERA and 1.14 WHIP across 153 innings. Singer strucked out 24.2 percent of batters he faced and walked just 5.6 percent.
What if I told you that Brady Singer had a higher K-BB% and a lower SIERA and xFIP than Sandy Alcantara? Singer is good, and he has only made improvements to his arsenal this spring. He has an improved changeup and is throwing his sinker from a different release point.
He has struck out 13 batters this spring and has a 2.35 ERA in 7.2 innings this spring. Is Singer going to be an ace? No. But could he be a very valuable back-end SP2? Absolutely. Treat him as such for dynasty.
James Outman, OF, LAD
James Outman has made the Dodgers’ Opening Day roster. The questions I have gotten are is he a priority pick-up? As much as I like Outman, it seems like Jason Heyward and David Peralta are ahead of him in the pecking order. That may fail quickly and Outman may get his shot, but I don’t see everyday playing time for Outman at the moment, unfortunately.
That is a shame because Outman can hit. The lefty mashed 32 home runs between Double-A, Triple-A, and the Majors last year, and his lowest batting average at any stop was .292. Outman has plus power, plus speed, and excellent plate discipline. He is a heavy line-drive hitter, which helps prop his batting averages.
With everyday playing time, Outman could approach 20 home runs and 15 stolen bases. He plays up in an OBP league. But I could see Outman hitting .270.
Yusei Kikuchi, LHP, TOR
I have ignored Yusei Kikuchi long enough this spring. After a disastrous 2022 in which he posted a 5.19 ERA across 100 innings, Kikuchi looks like a different pitcher this spring. After throwing five scoreless innings in which he struck out nine batters, Kikuchi has a 1.00 ERA.
Before we go too crazy on him, it is worth noting that Kikuchi has walked ten batters in 18 innings, good for a 14 percent rate. It is hard to survive as a starter when you talk that many. The increased strikeouts are encouraging, though as he has 25 on the spring.
In reality, I don’t know what to make of Kikuchi. There have been plenty of reasons to be encouraged, but also reasons to be concerned. I am cautiously optimistic overall.
Victor Robles, OF, WSH
Has anyone noticed the spring that Victor Robles is having? I certainly did not until writing this. He is quietly slashing .342/.390/.579 with just five strikeouts in 38 plate appearances. He has added one home run and has six extra-base hits.
Robles was once a top prospect billed as a high-end hitter with double-plus speed. Last year he hit just six home runs and stole 15 bases with a .224 average. Im not saying Robles is in for a breakout, but I am intrigued by his plate discipline and contact.
Robles has virtually no dynasty value, so it may be worth adding/trading for him and seeing where it goes.
