Ranking the 20 Best DSL Prospects for Fantasy Baseball
Chris Clegg breaks down the top fantasy baseball prospects from the DSL including Angeibel Gomez, Francisco Renteria and more.
Tuesday, August 18 marks the end of the DSL season. It feels like the season just began and it already coming to close. At this point we have a great feel for who the best prosepcts are from the league for fantasy baseball purposes.
While DSL players are hard to evaluate because of the limited film we have, using underlying data helps us better evaluate. I stand by the fact that DSL surface stats mean nothing. For reference, 115 DSL hitters with 120 or more plate apperances have a 120 wRC+ or better. The league-wide walk rate is 19 percent. It is just so hard to statline scout.
Regardless, getting in on the future stars from the DSL early in important. Without further ado, here are the top 20 prospects from the DSL. FWIW, it feels like a really talented crop of hitters.
The Top Fantasy Baseball Prospects from the DSL
1. Angeibel Gomez, OF, Kansas City Royals
Gomez has been the best hitter in the DSL, and honestly one of the best in all the minors. In 174 plate appearances, Gomez has nine home runs and 14 stolen bases while slashing .360/.471/.662. This is no surprise as he is arguably the best prospect the Royals have signed on the international market in some time, as the team gave him a $2.9 million bonus.
Gomez's data stands out in a big way for his age and rivals any DSL player’s data in recent history, including Jesus Made. He has a strong approach, running a chase rate just north of 20 percent. He also has made contact at a rate north of 80 percent with an in-zone mark above 90 percent.
Pulling the ball in the air with authority, Gomez has an air rate of 75 percent, which is extremely impressive. The batted ball data is quite good as well, as Gomez has hit balls as hard as 111 mph and has a 90th percentile exit velocity of 105 mph. He is an exceptional athlete, and Gomez is an above-average to plus runner.
The Royals have shown a propensity to push good international players aggressively, but the track record of many of their top international prospects has not been good. If you remember last season, they pushed Kendry Chourio from the DSL to the complex to Single-A. He is now an 18-year-old pitcher in High-A.
It would not be surprising to see Gomez start next year in Single-A and skip the complex completely. He is a generational-looking talent.
