New York Yankees Top Prospects for 2026

1. George Lombard Jr., SS, 21, 6’2”/190, AAA (Prev Rank: 1)

2026 Update

Lombard quickly moved to Triple-A and has continued to hit. He seems like the model of consistency and has a slash of .281/.407/.503 with 11 home runs and 12 stolen bases. Under the hood, Lombard has an impressive 92 mph average exit velocity with a 105 90th percentile. The chase rate is a strong 22 percent with an 81 percent zone-contact rate.

Drafted in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft, Lombard has had buzz around his name for some time. His father, George, played six MLB seasons and had coached in the Majors for ten years at this point. Lombard Jr’s younger brother, Jacob, will be one of the top draft picks in the 2026 MLB Draft.

After starting out his career pretty slowly, Lombard put in the work during the offseason before the 2025 season. When I saw him in Spring Training, Lombard looked physically stronger, and his swing was more balanced. The bat speed also looked much faster than when I saw him the previous summer.

Lombard sits deep in the box at the plate and has a narrow stance before utilizing a small leg kick and getting pretty wide, creating strong hand-to-hip separation. The swing is smooth and fluid, with little wasted movement. Lombard does not expand the zone often, having one of the better chase rates in Single-A in 2024.

The surface numbers for Lombard were pretty meh again in 2025 as he slashed .235/.367/.381 for the season with nine home runs and 35 stolen bases. The underlying metrics steadily improved all season. Lombard posted a 102.7 mph 90th percentile exit velocity and had an average exit velocity of 88.3 mph. The contact rates were not ideal, but they were fine, as he had a 73 percent contact rate and just a 76 percent in-zone contact rate. Lombard does show good plate discipline, having a 21 percent chase rate and a 12 percent walk rate in 2024.
