Minor League Hitters With Strong Contact and Power
Chris Clegg breaks down some prospects with impressive blends of contact and the ability to get to power.
Some would argue hit tool over everything. I am not that guy. A hit tool is extremely important but a hitter has to have other skills to succeed. Nowadays, players with strong hit tools can add power through a variety of programs. Kristian Campbell is a perfect example of that. He had a great hit tool his entire college career and went through a bat speed training program, which allowed him to be the best hitter in the minors in 2024.
Having a good hit tool is pretty critical for success as players move up the farm system and into the majors. Today I take a look at players who showed plus or better contact skills while also having good power numbers. Several of these hitters are flying far too under the radar.
MiLB Hitters with Strong Contact and Power Skills
Kristian Campbell, INF/OF, BOS, 22
Campbell had an extraordinary year, and there is a clear reason why he was named Minor League Player of the Year by multiple big outlets. Ascending from High-A to Triple-A by season end, Campbell slashed .330/.439/.558 in 517 plate appearances. Campbell blasted 20 home runs and had 32 doubles and three triples to have an impressive 55 extra-base hits.
Early in the year, it seemed Campbell was trading his strong contact skills in for power. In the first two months of the season, Campbell had a contact rate below 73 percent. Month by month, Campbell found a way to blend his strong contact skills with impressive power gains. From June forward, his overall contact rate was north of 82 percent, with an in-zone mark near 90 percent.
The power gains were also evident this year as Campbell posted a 90th percentile exit velocity of around 106 mph. He hit home runs as far as 450 feet with exit velocities north of 113 mph.
The ability to make gains in the power department and merge his contact skills with the power was highly impressive.
