The Prospect Report
🚀 Weekend Standouts
Spencer Jones, OF, New York Yankees (AAA)
Stats: 6/15 3 HR, 2 SB
Why The Performance Matters:
Jones is one of the most polarizing prospects in the game of baseball. Having massive tools, Jones arguably has some of the best power in the game, coupled with good speed. The problem is strikeouts.
No stranger to go on massive heaters where people think Jones is finally putting it all together, Jones looks to be doing it again. Blasting three home runs over the weekend, Jones put up some absurd exit velocities, having eight hard-hit balls and reaching 117.4 as a max exit velocity for the weekend.
The other notable thing is that Jones was seeing the ball well, striking out just three times this weekend. For the year, Jones is still striking out at a 33 percent clip with a lot of concerning traits.
Every year, people talk about how Jones is still very young as a hitter, as he used to pitch. That is great, but Jones is turning 25 years old in a week and still has a 20-grade hit tool. The tools are fun, but he is going to strike out way to much in the Majors.
Fantasy Spin:
Sure, you may like big exit velocities, everyone does. But Jones is running a 56 percent contact rate this season with a 33 percent chase rate. The zone contact is abysmal at 64 percent.
I just don’t think Jones is going to hit enough to make his tools work. He is on the verge of being a non-prospect for me, despite the massive upside if somehow it clicks for him. -CC
Bradley Blalock, RHP, Miami Marlins (AAA)
Stats: 6 IP/2 H/3 ER/1 BB/12 K
Notable Data: 22 Whiffs
Why The Performance Matters:
Blalock technically is no longer a prospect, but he is close enough that he is worth talking about. After being traded from the Rockies to the Marlins this offseason, Blalock became interesting again and he has certainly pitched like an arm worth stashing in fantasy leagues.
Over the weekend, Blalock turned in one of his best starts to date, tossing six innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out 12. He generated an impressive 22 whiffs on the start and now has a 3.09 ERA across 32 innings in Triple-A.
Blalock’s fastball works 94-95, but touches 98 mph with a near cut-ride shape. The fastball plays well enough, but the secondaries stand out. He mixes in a 90 mph cutter with strong traits and plays off of it with an 85 mph slider.
The 88 mph splitter has late depth and 10 inches of fading action on it. Blalock rounds out his arsenal with an 80 mph curveball that is near 12-6 shape and a ton of vertical drop.
Fantasy Spin:
The Marlins rotation is not good at the back end, if we are honest. Chris Paddack has not been great, and Janson Junk seems like he will inevitably come back to earth soon. Paddack also has some injury concerns.
While Thomas White and Robby Snelling loom, neither are on the 40-Man roster. Blalock has pitched well enough to get a shot if Paddack is out with an injury. I would stash Blalock in a 15-team or deeper league where you need a starting pitcher. -CC
