Jesús Báez, SS, St. Louis Cardinals

Stats: 6/14 4 HR

Why The Performance Matters:

Báez dominated over the weekend, blasting four home runs, including a three-homer game on Sunday. The power outbreak has been insane to watch this year, as Báez is now up to 34 home runs, and he has a slash of .267/.312/.569.

This has been a tough eval for me this year because the surface stats are insane, but I have wondered if the approach can work. It is an aggressive approach with a chase rate north of 30 percent, and in turn, the walk rate in Double-A has been below four percent.

The power breakout is legit though, backed by strong exit velocity gains and an ability to pull the ball in the air. With quite a few exit velos north of 110 mph, the 90th percentile is in the plus range.

He makes a ton of contact, running an overall contact rate around 78 percent with an in-zone contact rate around 85 percent. At the end of the day, I think Baez has enough things going for him that the bad approach can work with the rest of the profile. -CC

Ryan Sloan, RHP, Seattle Mariners

Why The Performance Matters:

It was interesting around the social media world as Kade Anderson was called up to the Mariners and everyone started talking about how he was boring, and Sloan was by far the superior prospect. I dont have a problem with this take, and I do agree Sloan has a higher ceiling. It is just always interesting when one person says something and 20 other people then run with the narrative, acting like it’s theirs.

Anyways, Sloan came out guns blazing and backed everyone's thoughts as he punched out 11 batters and allowed just one baserunner in five innings of work. He generated an impressive 20 whiffs on the outing.

Sloan throws from a 5’6” release height and gets 6’10” of extension down the mound. His fastball averages about 96 mph and gets 16 inches of IVB with 6 inches of horizontal break. He mixes in a sinker that gets 9 inches of IVB and 12 inches of horizontal break.

The best pitch in the arsenal is a double-plus sweeper that sits in the mid-80s and gets 13 inches of sweep. There is a solid changeup here as well to go along with a cutter. Sloan spins the ball exceptionally well and flashes ace-level stuff as we saw over the weekend. The floor is also there for a mid-rotation starter. -CC
