Minor League Baseball Weekend Recap: The Top 15 Performances (Week 13)

A comprehensive recap of the top stars and standouts of the weekend of Minor League Baseball. Read about Cam Caminiti, Aidan Smith, Bo Davidson, and many more!

At the beginning of each week, I will provide a comprehensive breakdown of everything that happened across the landscape of Minor League Baseball. It might be a little overkill as I wrote far too much on the players that stood out on the weekend, but I hope it helps you better understand why a player performed as they did.

This report, each Monday, will feature the top 15-20 standouts beyond just the box score. I will dive into non-public pitch data and hitters’ statcast data as well. The goal is to help you find prospects that are breaking out early that you should be getting in on in your dynasty leagues.

Minor League Baseball Weekend Recap(Week 13)

Aidan Smith, OF, Tampa Bay Rays, 20, A+

If anyone has needed a big resurgence recently, it is Aidan Smith. After struggling out of the gate this season, he has picked things up and even blasted two home runs on Sunday. Strikeouts and contact are still a major issue as he posted another multi-strikeout game to go with the two homers.

It is interesting to look at the data and surface numbers. Over his last 18 games, Smith is slashing a solid .271/.361/.557 with six home runs and five stolen bases. On the flip side, he has still struck out 32.5 percent of the time over that span, and his contact rates are concerning. The issues I have seen from Smith revolve around whiffs on fastballs. I haven’t seen him against many great fastballs, but he has whiffed often.

Smith already has a great frame at 6’3”/195 lb and easily generates power, but does not put a major focus on that, letting the power come naturally. His swing is efficient, and he can easily drive the ball to all fields. One of the biggest changes in the profile is more ground balls this year, which has limited the power to an extent.

Smith is a good athlete, but will need to clean up his contact in order to be a top 100 prospect.

Bo Davidson, OF, San Francisco Giants, 22, A+

Probably the most unlikely breakout candidate in 2024, Chanteyon Ajria Davidson, better known as Bo, did just that last season. An undrafted outfielder out of Caldwell Community College in Hudson, NC, the 6’2”/205 lb outfielder is what you truly call a pop-up prospect.

After starting the year in Single-A, Davidson struggled and eventually rehabbed at the complex, where he regained his confidence. After returning to Single-A San Jose, Davidson reached base in 34 of 36 games and posted an impressive .410/.532/.795 slash line. Over that torrid span, Davidson hit nine home runs, ten doubles, and five triples. In the process, the strikeout rate dropped to 22 percent.

Now in High-A Eugene, Davidson has continued to perform. A four-hit performance on Sunday included two home runs and a double, which extended Davidson’s hit streak to eight games.

The approach has remained sound even with the jump in level, as Davidson is chasing at a rate in the low 20 percent range. The contact skills have also taken a jump this year as Davidson is making contact at a 76 percent overall clip. The exit velocities are impressive, and Davidson can mash to all fields, hitting a 110 mph home run to the opposite field earlier this year.

It is a fun profile to dream on for sure, as Davidson has plenty of tools in his belt. The contact gains make him a legitimate prospect at this point.

Cam Caminiti, LHP, Atlanta Braves, 18, A

After missing time with a forearm injury this spring, Caminiti, the Braves’ 2024 first-rounder, returned to Single-A and dominated. While three of his four starts in Augusta have been just four or five innings, Caminiti has struck out 22 batters in those starts and walked a total of three. On Saturday, Caminiti turned in an impressive performance with eight strikeouts and zero walks.

Caminiti generated 11 whiffs on the start, good for a 41 percent whiff rate, and had a 44 percent CSW. He was highly efficient, landing 68 percent of his pitches for strikes and when Caminiti was not missing bats, he kept the ball on the ground at a 56 percent clip.

Last season, when I sat on Caminiti’s pro debut, he touched 96 but was routinely sitting in the 93-95 range early. Toward the end of the start, Caminiti was sitting closer to 93. The fastball velocity is now holding 95-96 the entire start, with only a couple of 94s sprinkled in. The pitch shows around average IVB from a 5’8” release height and has good horizontal movement.

Caminiti throws two slider variations, a sweeper with long horizontal movement, registering 15 inches of sweep consistently. It sits around 83 mph, and Caminiti also throws an upper-80s slider with a more traditional slider shape

The changeup looked sharp as well, sitting 87-88 mph with late dive and fading action. The arsenal looks improved, and there were no signs of Caminiti’s forearm bothering him in the start. He looks ready to take a big step forward this season.

It is also worth noting that Caminiti is younger than some prep players in this summer’s draft. He was originally in the 2025 draft class before reclassifying.
