Colson Montgomery, SS, Chicago White Sox, 23, AAA
What a wild season it has been for Montgomery. After slashing .149/.223/.255 with a 42 percent strikeout rate in his first 103 plate appearances, Montgomery hit the development list. While hitting the reset button mentally and mechanically, Montgomery has returned to Charlotte and looks like his old self.
Despite dealing with a knee injury, Montgomery still blasted two home runs on Thursday, and has four total with six doubles in 87 plate appearances since coming back. The slash line sits at .253/.356/.493 with a 21.8 percent strikeout rate. The numbers before and after are striking.
Under the hood, the power has looked good all year. Montgomery has a 115.3 mph max exit velocity and a 90th percentile exit velocity north of 108 mph. Surprisingly, the season-long zone contact is north of 85 percent, and the chase rate is below 30 percent for the season.
But, since returning the contact rate is up to 79 percent overall and 89 percent on pitches in the zone. The chase rate has dropped to 24 percent and his 90th percentile exit velocity is 109.7 mph.
What an impressive turnaround for Montgomery.
Adam Serwinowski, LHP, Cincinnati Reds, 20, A+
After starting the year very strong and looking like a true breakout, Serwinowski hit a wall and struggled in May. In four starts between May 10 and May 30, Serwinowski allowed 16 earned runs and nine walks in 12 innings. The good news, he struck out 20 batters over that span.
On Thursday, Serwinowski dominated across six innings, allowing just two hits and one walk, while striking out nine batters. Serwinowski also landed 55 of his 81 pitches for strikes and posted a 41 percent CSW.
There have been some notable improvements for Serwinowski who has seen his first pitch strike rate jump ten percentage points and the overall strike rate is up to an above-average 63 percent.
The lefty sits 94 mph on his fastball with 17 inches of IVB from a 6’0” release height. The pitch plays up due to 6’8” of extension. The slider sits in the low 80s with long sweeping action, averaging around 10 inches of horizontal with good depth as well. He generates an exceptional amount of whiffs on the slider and can get chase out of the zone. The further development of a changeup will take Serinowski a long way.
