Major Minor Matters 5/21
Three things I cared about from Minor League Baseball on May 21st
On a New Level: Jhonny (SFG) Extends Hitting Streak to Six Games with Two Homer, Four Hit Night
Jhonny Level notched his fourth career two homer game yesterday. It was his second in three days as he punished Stockton pitching with eight hits over that span. The hope coming into the season was he would elevate the ball more often for more consistent damage on contact. That hasn’t come true but he’s still managed to come into significantly more game power (34 PA/HR in 2025, 19 PA/HR in 2026). He’ll likely settle into above-average power outcomes (his EV90 is a tick below MLB average today) with above-average bat-to-ball skills. I’d still take other nominal shortstops like Steele Hall, Devin Fitz-Gerald, and Emil Morales ahead of him, but he’s clearly a top 100 prospect with a case for top 50 by mid-season.
Cristian Arguelles (COL) Carries Momentum from DSL MVP Campaign to Stateside Competition
Cristian Arguelles was a DSL repeat last year and had a tremendous season culminating in a .422/.528/.652 slash and circuit MVP honors. His first go-around was more challenging; he turned 17 during the 2024 season and had trouble doing more than walking and slapping singles, though he posted a reasonable OBP that kept him afloat. Now stateside, Arguelles is powering up early in the Complex season with seven extra-base hits in his first 14 games to go with a strong plate approach and solid contact skills. He’ll be a bit of a slow burn, but if he continues to perform I can see him being worth an add in leagues that roster 250 or more prospects.
Nathan Flewelling (TBR) Takes Flight Twice, Eyes Double-A
There are two catchers in Bowling Green who absolutely need playing time, preferably behind the dish rather than as the DH. Caden Bodine was promoted from Single-A earlier this week, and while he would be a reasonable candidate for a second promotion to Double-A as a college draftee, my bet is Flewelling gets the next bump. He’s been stellar over 36 games, accruing a .288/.383/.561 line with 10 home runs. His power potential from behind the dish is rare, enough so that should the Rays prefer Bodine’s glove, Flewelling can feasibly hit enough for a corner. He’s a top 100 prospect presently with upside for the top 50 by season’s end.
