Houston Astros Top Prospects for 2026

1. Brice Matthews, INF, 24, 5’11”/190, MLB

Matthews was an analytic darling in the 2023 draft out of Nebraska, whom the Astros plucked at the end of the first round. A patient hitter with a strong feel for the strike zone, Matthews has run high OBPs with plenty of power and speed.

Spending most of the year in Triple-A, Matthews also reached the Majors, where he hit four home runs in 47 plate appearances, but also struggled in a lot of ways. In 498 Triple-A plate appearances, Matthews slashed .260/.371/.458 with 17 home runs and 41 stolen bases.

Matthews is a stellar athlete, which is evident when you see him in person and watch him run. He steals bases with ease, getting great reads and jumps. The power upside is there as Matthews posted a 106 mph 90th percentile exit velocity with strong batted ball angles and topping out at 113 mph.

The biggest concern with Matthews is his contact ability. For the second straight season, Matthews posted a contact rate south of 70 percent, with it sitting around 64 percent in Triple-A and an in-zone mark around 76 percent. The approach is sound as Matthews ran a low chase rate around 22 percent and had respectable in-zone swing marks.

With the strong exit velocities, Matthews hits the ball at ideal angles, creating impressive barrel rates. The question is, will he make enough contact? There are major questions about whether he will hit enough, but if he does, the upside is there.
