Future Number One Prospect? Kevin McGonigle Might Be It.

Is Kevin McGonigle the next number one prospect in baseball? Plus, who else stood out on the Minor League side of Wednesday's act

Another scorcher of a day here in Charleston. Trevor Harrison shoved, and we didn’t get a ton from Jacob Zibin or any hitter for that matter. But tonight it is on the Braylon Doughty, which will be a lot of fun as he squares off against Andres Galan, who has been rather dominant himself.

I recapped everything you need to know from yesterday’s entire slate of minor league action, though. An 18th-round prep lefty might be breaking out, plus, how close is Cam Schlittler to breaking into the Majors?

All that and a ton more below!

Free Minor League Baseball Recap Previews

Each day, I will pick a hitter and pitcher who stand out and deserve the top spot on the sheet. Those players’ reports will be free for all to read. The rest will be paywalled for Dynasty Dugout Subscribers. The article is around 3000 words, giving you detailed player reports to encapsulate everything you need to know.

Kevin McGonigle, MI, Detroit Tigers, 20 A+

A trip to Erie might be in order next week for McGonigle as he has been the best hitter in the minors. A 106 mph home run on Wednesday night was his sixth of the year to pair with 19 doubles in just 33 games played.

Getting off to an incredible start to 2025, but hurt his ankle just one game into the season. He returned on May 10 and has continued to hit. McGonigle now has hits in ten of his last 11 games with seven doubles and four homers over that span.

The contact rates are insanely impressive, running an overall mark near 84 percent with an in-zone contact rate in the upper-80 percent range. The approach has been stellar throughout McGonigle’s career with a chase rate below 20 percent.

While he may be small, McGonigle has more power than you might think. The exit velocities show that as McGonigle has reached 112 mph several times in his career and has routinely put up 105 mph or higher this year since returning.

A broken hamate ended McGonigle’s 2024 season, and the ankle injury early in 2025 has some ready to label him as injury-prone, but both of these are fluky. I would buy high on McGonigle right now. The approach is stellar with his low chase rate and strong swing rate on pitches in the zone. The amount of contact and the quality of it is absurd. This might be the number one prospect in baseball.

Emmet Sheehan, RHP, Los Angeles Dodgers, 25, AAA

Sheehan is pitching in Triple-A, why? After having Tommy John Surgery and missing all of 2024 and some of this season, Sheehan shoved in his return in a Dodgers uniform last week. He was optioned back to Triple-A and sent a message to the Dodgers and all of baseball, “I should be pitching in the Majors.”

Throwing six perfect innings, Sheehan struck out 13 batters and generated 21 whiffs, good for a 50 percent mark. He added ten more called strikes and landed 73 percent of his pitches for strikes.

While throwing the four-seam fastball 68 percent of the time, Sheehan dominated with it. He averaged north of 97 mph with 19 inches of IVB on average, touching 23 inches. 15 of the 21 whiffs came on that pitch.

Sheehan also mixed in his slider and changeup, while dropping in a couple of curveballs. There is no reason why Sheehan should be pitching in Triple-A. Despite Ohtani being back pitching, Sheehan should still be starting regularly in a Dodgers uniform.
