Dynasty Fantasy Baseball Buy Low/Sell High - Week 3

Knowing when to hold and when to fold on players can take you a long way in dynasty leagues. Here is who to buy and sell this week in dynasty leagues.

Knowing who to buy and who to sell is the most important thing you can do in dynasty leagues. Outside of the waiver wire, that is. We are still very early into the season, especially on the Minor League side of things. But there are still indications on players you can buy and sell. I break down why on each. Find out which prospects are breaking out, you should get in on, and which you should look to cash out on before the stock falls.

Let’s dive into the players to know!

Dynasty Fantasy Baseball Buys and Sells

Sell High: Zack Wheeler, RHP, Philadelphia Phillies

Wheeler carries significant name value in fantasy circles and for good reason. Since 2020, Wheeler has thrown 979 innings and posted a 2.91 ERA with a 28 percent strikeout rate and a 5.6 percent walk rate. He has been an innings eater and the most consistent top-five pitcher in baseball for the last six seasons.

The problem is, Wheeler’s 2025 season ended early, and he underwent Thoracic Outlet Decompression surgery to treat a blood clot in his throwing shoulder. This also required a rib to be removed. While nearly 80 percent of pitchers return to the mound after the procedure, a study found that pitchers’ ERAs usually dont recover after the procedure. In fact, of the 27 pitchers studied, the average ERA before and after surgery jumped from 3.66 to 4.50. Strike percentage also varied significantly, while velocity tended to return.

Wheeler will turn 36 years old in a month. The average age of pitchers in the study was 28. While Wheeler has returned to the mound and is pitching on rehab in Triple-A, the stuff is largely diminished. While I dont put a lot of stock in the 5.23 ERA through 10 rehab innings, the more concerning thing is the velocity and command and control.

Last season, Wheeler averaged 96.1 mph on his fastball and sat in that range for the last four seasons. This year, though it is still early, Wheeler is averaging south of 93 mph and has topped out at 94 mph. The release point has changed a bit, and Wheeler has also lost a few inches of extension.

After running a walk rate below six percent since 2020, Wheeler has walked nine percent of batters so far in the early going.

While I don’t want to write off Wheeler completely, I do think there are some concerns regarding what Wheeler looks like upon return. With the dangerous procedure and his age, despite the consistency we have seen in the past, I have a hard time projecting Wheeler returning to ace status. While you may have some in your league excited about the return, I might look to trade him if you can get a top 20 pitcher in return.

Prospect Sell High: Josiah Hartshorn, OF, Chicago Cubs

Do I think Hartshorn is a good prospect? Absolutely. But my gosh, the hype is out of control right now. Twitter is just a big screaming match on who is higher on him and why Hartshorn is a top 100 prospect and even as high as top 20. We are talking about eight games, and the majority of these people screaming about how good he is didn’t know who he was two weeks ago.

So far, Hartshorn has struck out just one time and taken 10 walks. That is great, but it is also important to realize how bad pitching is in Single-A. Hartshorn has a homer as well as a triple and a double. While the start has been incredible, Hartshorn runs high ground ball rates and has a swing that will need some tweaking to get to more loft consistently. The contact numbers look great, and the approach is sound, but the hype is out of control.

Hartshorn entered the Cubs’ 2025 draft class as one of the more intriguing offensive talents outside of the top rounds. While he was selected in the sixth round, Hartshorn got a $2 million bonus to pry him away from a Texas A&M commitment. At 6’2”, 220 lbs, he’s already physically mature for a prep bat, and scouts rave about the power potential in the profile.

If you can cash out on Hartshorn and get a top 75 prospect, I would smash that quickly.
