Complex League Climbers: Hitters Rising Rankings

We are a little over two weeks into complex ball, and we already have some graduates heading off to Single-A. Even in a small sample, we can identify some players that are really popping off and not only putting up good surface numbers, but good data.

Today, we are going to focus on the hitters’ side of things and which names you really need to know that could be taking legitimate steps forward.

Complex League Standouts

Michael Martinez, OF, Atlanta Braves (Promoted to A)

Martinez mashed his way through the complex and spent just 11 games there before getting a promotion to Single-A Augusta. Having a double in his first game in Augusta was right in line with what we saw from him at the complex.

In 46 complex plate apperances, Martinez slashed .375/.522/.781 iwth four home runs and a double, and he even added two stolen bases. After striking out at a 17 percent clip last season, Martinez has dropped that mark to 11 percent so far this year, and he has walked at a 22 percent clip.

After registering a max exit velocity of 112.1 mph at the complex, Martinez already smoked a ball 111 mph in Single-A and had a couple of other balls hit over 100 mph. The average exit velocity at the complex sat around 94 mph, and it also comes with a strong approach.

Running a chase rate just north of 20 percent, Martinez looks the part of a high OBP slugger. It will be interesting to see what kind of contact numbers we get in Single-A. But this is a well-filled-out frame for a hitter who just turned 19 years old, and the power is legitimately plus or better. Add in leagues that roster 250 prospects.
