Cincinnati Reds Top Prospects for 2027
1. Alfredo Duno, C, 20, 6’2”/210, AA
Very few prospects hit the ball quite as hard as Alfredo Duno, and that is a lot of the selling point for him. Because there have been some contact yellow flags that popped up. He hit 19 homers and hit .281/.395/.504.
When you post a 90th percentile exit velocity of 109 mph that shows you the power he brings to the table. There is a chance for a 30-homer bat. He does sacrifice contact for damage, and that might just work, regardless of whether he ends up as a catcher or at 1B. There is a slight leg-kick in his pre-swing motion; he sinks into his back hip and explodes towards the ball. He is looking to get his “a-swing” off with every swing. There is tremendous power, and power to all fields, and that power with Great American for half his games is exciting. There will be some swing-and-misses in his game, but if he is hitting 30 homers, that will be less of an issue.
There isn’t going to be much speed, but maybe in his peak years he sneakily steals 3-5 bags. But again, it’s about the power, and there are very few prospects who have his power, and he has more than enough hit tool to tap into the power, even if the zone-contact hovers around the low 80’s there is a chance he still hits 30 homers, because the damage he does is exceptional. The other exciting thing this year is he has started to lift and pull more batted balls, making me that much more bullish on him.
We would prefer him to stick at catcher but the bat is more advanced than the glove. At least in the early parts of his career, he might retain C eligibility, and if that’s the case, he could be a top 5 option at that spot with his power.
FFG: Middle-of-The-Order Catcher
90th Percentile Peak Outcome: .250/.360/30 HR/5 SB
Variance: Moderate
