Boston Red Sox Top Prospects for 2026

1. Payton Tolle, LHP, 23, 6’6”/250 MLB

Beginning the year in High-A Greenville, the 2024 2nd rounder, Tolle, moved quickly through the system all the way to the Majors and even pitched in the playoffs. Pitching to a 3.04 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP across 91.2 MiLB innings, Tolle struck out 36.5 percent of batters, while walking just 6.3 percent of hitters. While the ERA was high in a small MLB sample, Tolle still punched out 26 percent of the hitters he faced and gained valuable experience.

Standing at 6’6", Tolle has a hulking presence on the mound and gets extreme extension toward the plate as high as 7’10”. His fastball is up three ticks from 2024, sitting north of 95 mph but topping out at 98 mph. It is unique, given his 5’5” release height and extremely flat VAA. The movement profile was inconsistent, but the IVB was consistently around 16.5 inches; Tolle topped around 20 inches of IVB.

After throwing a slider and curve in college, Tolle is now throwing a slider and sweeper. The sweeper sits in the 83-84 mph range with a long horizontal break. The upper-80s slider plays more like a cutter with some depth to it. At times, the upper-80s slider played like a death ball with 0 inches of IVB and 0 inches of horizontal. Others it was 5 inches of IVB and 6 inches of sweep.

The changeup took a huge step forward as the season went on, working around 90 mph with eight inches of horizontal movement. It did reach up to 15 inches of fade when he really caught it well. Tolle also did a great job of differentiating his breaking balls more and locating them better.

You could argue that Tolle is one of the best pitching prospects in baseball, especially with the progress in the secondaries and the elite fastball.
