Beck's Minor League Threecap: 5/24/24
Beck breaks down three major things you need to know from yesterday's MiLB action.
Heyo! It’s another Shorty-cap today. I’m in the northwoods at a cabin celebrating my anniversary, so I’m writing as much as I can without getting into hot water. Enjoy!
I’ve Got A Fever…
…and the only prescription is more Robert Calaz (COL). He’s my favorite prospect from last year’s DSL class that I didn’t already have in my top 100. He was 3-for-5 with his third bomb of the year in the Arizona Complex League yesterday, bringing his total slash to .373/.448/.745. He’s whiffing a bit more than you might like (31.4% K-rate through 51 PAs) but also hits the seams off the ball, so we’ll take it. He reminds me a bit of last year’s Sebastian Walcott.
Calling Henry Davis (PIT) “Hammerin’ Hank” would be sacrilegious so we’ll have to come up with something else. He was optioned to Triple-A on May 3rd to make room for Yasmani Grandal after the former opened the year with a ghastly .162/.280/.206 line through 23 games. All he’s done since that demotion is rake, but with the resurgence of Joey Bart, it’s hard to see where Davis figures back in. He belted a pair of home runs in a 3-for-6 night on Thursday.
Groovy McGreevy.
I saved this writeup for last, so while you’re reading it smack dab in the middle of the article, it’s the final bit of writing from me today. As such, I’m in the danger zone with my fiancee and don’t have time to blabber on about Michael McGreevy (STL). He went 8.0 innings of one-run ball and struck out 11. He hasn’t been particularly effective so far this year, pitching to a 5.13 ERA and punching out just 41 of 229 batters faced (17.9%) through 52.2 innings.
Trevor Martin (TBR) had a weird, albeit good, line on Thursday. He managed to give up a home run without being tagged with an earned run as a scoring quirk that rarely occurs. He had one out in the inning, a field error was committed, then he collected the second out, and finally gave up the long ball. Given that the error prior to the second out would have made the second actually the third, any damage from that point forward is considered unearned. That applies even if he was the one who committed the error. Bizarre! He ultimately went 6.2 innings, allowed two unearned runs, and struck out 11. He’s been impressive so far this year.
It’s Logan Evans’ World, We’re Just Living in It.
At least as far as today’s table goes. Pretty poor showing altogether, but Evans was the only arm to throw up true zeroes. Strong outings from Hackenberg and Sullivan, too.
