Athletics Top Prospects for 2027
1. Leo De Vries, SS, 20, 6’0”/183, AA
Leo De Vries is one of the very best prospects in the entire sport, thanks to a mix of power and speed, and more than enough plate skills to tap into those tools, especially from the left side, where he might be a plus hitter, which is the side you want to be a plus hitter from if you are a switch hitter. Not that he is any slouch from the right side; he probably projects as a 50–55 hitter from the right side with 60 power, while from the left side, he is a 60 hitter with the same power.
On the season, Leo De Vries hit .290/.378/.458 with 13 homers and 34 stolen bases as a 19-year-old in Double-A. It’s big-time power, especially when he gets to pull a batted ball. There is a relative ease to how he gets to that power as well; it’s plus-plus bat speed and ample natural loft. There are few portions of the strike zone Leo De Vries can’t do damage to. There is all-fields power here, but when he gets a chance to grip it and rip it on a pitch on the inner third, he shows off tremendous power. LDV also pairs those plate skills and power with solid speed. He was very successful on the base paths, going 34-for-39 this past year.
LDV has a chance to be a Major Leaguer next year, where he will provide another exciting piece for a young A’s team. His biggest asset is his plus power on contact, and in his first couple of years, he should be able to rack up 15–20 steals a year. The hit tool going from average-ish this past year to being a potential plus tool is a welcome development for LDV, who has a chance to cement himself as a top-10 fantasy shortstop because of his well-rounded skill set and high ceiling.
