2026 Arizona and Florida Complex League Breakouts (Pitchers)
Discover the top prospects making headlines in the Arizona and Florida Complex Leagues this season, including breakout candidates, and future MLB stars to watch
Complex ball is officially underway, and we have more Minor League ball to cover. It is a good day! The complex is loaded with talent, especially out west in Arizona. Every year, we see plenty of prospects break out at the complex and head to full-season.
The Florida and Arizona Complex Leagues are the first professional proving ground for recent draft picks, international signees, and rising teenage phenoms. This year’s rosters are stacked with high-upside prospects and future stars eager to make their mark. From electric arms to breakout bats, here’s a look at some of the top young players set to play in Arizona and Florida.
Pitching Prospects Set to Breakout in the Florida and Arizona Complex Leagues
Kevin Defrank, RHP, 17, 6’5"/202, Miami Marlins
The Marlins gave Defrank a sizable bonus for an international pitcher at $560k. Defrank has a frame that suggests he could be a starter moving forward, and already has electric stuff. He pitched 31 innings in the DSL, posting a 3.19 ERA with a 24 percent strikeout rate to just a 7.1 percent walk rate.
The fastball is electric, sitting 96-97 mph and reaching triple digits. The shape does not stand out, but the velocity certainly does for his age. Coming stateside should allow Defrank to refine the shape further and develop into a solid offering.
Players Defrank’s age usually don’t have an advanced feel for a changeup like he does. He sells it well with good arm speed, and it comes with late fade and sinking action. While the sweeper is still in development, it has good glove-side movement and could wind up being a solid swing-and-miss pitch.
Considering what Defrank did as a 16-year-old, the upside is tremendous. There are a wide range of outcomes here, but Defrank could be a high-end starting pitcher if all clicks. Defrank likely works his way to Single-A pretty quickly if all pans out.
