Hitting Prospects Set to Breakout in the Florida and Arizona Complex Leagues
Josuar Gonzalez, SS, 18, 5’10”/178, San Francisco Giants
Gonzalez was the consensus top prospect in the J15 class from those I sourced. While he lacks the tall, projectable frame that some in the class have, Gonzalez still has room left to add to his athletic 6’0” frame. He is a quick-twitch athlete who runs exceptionally well and has a great feel for hitting.
The switch-hitter starts with an open stance and uses a small leg lift to transfer his weight. His entire body works together, and Gonzalez has strong hands, which allows him to create good bat lag and speed through the zone. From the right side, the setup is similar, but Gonzalez has a bit more pre-swing movement and drops his hands a little more before starting his swing. The right-handed swing is geared more toward an upper-cut approach.
Gonzalez put up an absurd combo of data in his pro debut, running a zone contact rate near 90 percent, while also having a 90th percentile exit velocity of 104 mph. He showed a sound approach, chasing just 20 percent of pitches out of the zone.
Luis Hernández, SS, 17, 5’10”/172, San Francisco Giants
For the second straight season, the Giants ink the top-ranked international signee after landing Josuar Gonzalez last season. Hernandez is as polished a young international signee as we have seen in some time. Training with Carlos Guillén, Hernandez has a well-rounded skill set and has performed well against good competition in games.
As a 15-year-old, Hernandez played in Liga Mayor de Béisbol Profesional (LMBP), which is the Venezuelan Professional League, and he held his own. While Hernandez got just 104 at-bats, he impressed, slashing .346/.386/.452 with a home run and eight extra base hits. He struck out just 11 times in 114 plate appearances and showed a highly impressive hit tool.
Hernandez has the potential to develop a plus hit tool and is presently an above-average runner. While Hernandez does not have the biggest frame, there is always a chance he could continue to grow. Given the bat speed and beautiful swing, Hernandez projects as someone who could develop into a 22-25 home run bat.
The floor at the plate and the glove are what make Hernandez attractive. He projects as a future 20-20 type player with room for more growth and a strong feel to hit and get on base.
